One of the things I was most excited about in this new house (besides two sinks in our master bathroom!!) was my own closet. It’s a pretty tiny closet, but it was my very own. And after sharing a closet with Philip for six years, I was ready for my own space.
However, with only one shelf, one rod, and one dresser from IKEA, things got out of control cluttery really quickly. I’m a pretty clean and organized person, but lack of space was making organization impossible.
So a trip to Home Depot and one evening of putting everything together, and suddenly I have a whole new closet with a place for everything. Now I’m just not allowed to buy any more shoes 😉

The top shelf is this kind from Home Depot, and they cut it down in the lumber section to the exact length I needed. Then I installed it with these simple L-brackets.

The shoe divider is also from Home Depot. I found out after I purchased it that they had another version with 25 cubes, which I didn’t see in the store, but I would have preferred that one so I had more space for those shoes I’ll inevitably buy 🙂

I recently saw on Pinterest an idea to use a letter organizer to store your clutches (can’t find the pin now…). One of these days I’ll get to The Container Store and pick one up so my purses look a little less cluttery, but for now at least they’re off the floor.

My hats used to be stacked on top of my dresser, but that big floppy hat took up so much room. So in an effort to utilize all my closet space, I put three screws in the wall above the top shelf and now my hats hang there. Out of the way, and kind of a pretty display up there.

I found this three-section tray at Kohls, and it’s perfect for my bracelets which I separated into golds, silvers, and colors.

I also found this pretty bowl at Kohls and threw all my sunglasses in there (I used to have them in a nice row on the dresser, which means they pretty much always looked like a mess).

This little ramekin, which I’ve had forever, is perfect for storing my rings.

My mom bought me the jewelry pinboard on the left a few years ago for Christmas, but with the crazy number of necklaces I own, I was completely out of room. I picked up the one on the right at Target and use my sewing pins to hold up the necklaces. Also, the silver tray on the dresser was a gift from Landen and holds my watches and hair accessories.

I can’t even tell you how happy it makes me to open my closet now and see everything in its place. And now I’m itching to reorganize every closet in the house!

Love this makeover, mostly because it's something simple that is attainable; other closet makeovers include buying a million clear shoe boxes or sweater stack boxes or completely new hangers, and I always think "that is just not feasible on smaller budgets" – as always, you're there to save the day! 🙂

Your closet is absolutely beautiful, Merrick! I suffer from a teeny tiny closet too, so it's really refreshing to see such a cute and organized, SMALL space. 🙂

  8. Totally inspired to organize my closets now. I keep selling stuff on Poshmark trying to make room but then I just end up buying more with the $$$! ugh! lol.

I'm dreaming of organizing my own, new, walk-in closet once my house is done. 10 years of sharing is fun and all… 🙂 Yours looks amazing and I love the look of the dresser with the jewelry on top.

Looking at this re-organization project is making me think I really need to do something about my dysfunctional closet! Lol! I am lucky enough to have a walk-in and I can't even make that work! Crazy eh? I love your blog! I ran onto it not that long ago and have visited several times since. Your design is great. I love that you play around with fashion. That part of my life seems to be passing me up. I used to be so into it, and now I can't quite seem to find my fun, funky style anymore… Yet another lifestyle casualty of having kids…. Even though I wouldn't give them back for anything. 🙂 Well, you have inspired me. Thats all I can say.

P.S. do you remember me? I think we might have met somewhere along the way. I am Bart Bradshaws cousin. 🙂

  17. What a gorgeous set-up Merrick! I share a closet right now in the room I share with my boyfriend so it's super crowded and we rent it so we can't really change anything. When we finally move out and get our own place, I'd love the freedom to have my own closet it and make it as beautiful as yours. So jealous!

There's something about getting a peak at bloggers' closets that just make me so happy…

I LOVE how you store your jewelry! I recently moved my dresser in my closet and started using it to display jewelry but it looks like a hot mess! I'll be looking for some pretty bowls and cork boards to spice things up and keep it tidy!

I absolutely love this post, Merrick! I LOVE closet organization posts and think this looks amazing. I would love to do something like this in our closet (my husband and I share). We aren't sure how much longer we're going to be living in this apartment, so I don't want to do anything huge and drastic in there right now, but it would be fun to at least give it a little facelift 🙂 Thanks for the inspiration!
